So you want to be promoted. Most likely you are looking at the top spot in your department – as Manager.

The only time I had to deal as a “boss” to some people was when I was the editor-in-chief of our school paper, way back in college. It was tough, yes, but I learned a few words of wisdom both my adviser and from my experience.

To be an effective manager and leader of a group, quit being a nagger. Husbands and wives, you know what I mean. Constant nagging and bossing around would drive your staff’s motivation away. Consult them instead! You’re working with people. One person alone is complicated. Learn how to deal with diversities. Ask them for ideas. Get to know them. Team building activities help a lot. These give you a bird’s eye view of how your members relate to one another. You get to see their strengths and weaknesses. The trick here is to play these characteristics up. Capitalize on their best abilities.
